A fearless celebration
The 2019 UnderWorld Jazz Festival takes place this year from May 11th-25th, in Cincinnati, Ohio. This exciting festival not only calls attention to Cincinnati based performers, but will also bring internationally-renowned artists to our city for 2 weeks of world-class concerts and events.
This includes the return of Napoleon Maddox presents: "Twice The First Time" (stories of Millie-Christine McKoy) fresh off its European tour for ONE NIGHT ONLY and his "Mobilization of Congo Square" project, a traveling educational series of pop up jazz concerts, powered by People's Liberty.
The curators of the UnderWorld Jazz Festival, Kimberly Gory and Napoleon Maddox, recognize the history of "Jazz" as social music. It was born from work songs, surviving slavery, migration, and the African-American cultural experience as it relates to spirituals and blues. New forms of art expression continue to develop and become new trends because of this rich musical legacy.
This year UJF welcomes artists: Tank & the Bangas, Sorg and Napoleon Maddox, Marc Cary, LaFrae Sci, Fo/Mo/Deep, Eddy Kwon, DJ Apryl Reign, Nasty Nati Brass Band, and many more.
